Elementary School

Our school uses the Core Knowledge Sequence as its principal curricular guide in grades Pre-K 3 to Eight. The Core Knowledge Sequence, published by the Core Knowledge Foundation, provides a content-specific, and sequenced guide to what our students need to learn in each subject in each grade.

“The idea behind Core Knowledge is simple and powerful: Knowledge builds on knowledge. The more you know, the more you are able to learn … our most important goals for education- greater reading comprehension, the ability to think critically and solve problems, even higher test scores – are a function of the depth and breadth of knowledge.”

The Core Knowledge Foundation provides schools, teachers and parents an array of resources to help carry out the curriculum to its fullest potential. Students as early as Pre-Kindergarten at St. Augustine embark on a journey through the World History and Geography Program. They learn about world religions in first grade and the adventures of Greek mythology come alive for our second graders. In the third grade, students not only learn about Matisse’s life and masterpieces, but create their own works of art using his techniques. Fifth graders experience the Renaissance through its art, music and literature. By the time our students complete the elementary and middle school program, they have a strong foundation of knowledge that prepares them to face the challenges of our college-preparatory high school program.
